Premarital Counseling Myths: It's Too Expensive

by Marie McKinney-Oates on August 26, 2009

Myth #2 is that premarital counseling is too expensive. Yes, it can get pricey (individual sessions with a couple are $50 each and the Bound Together Workshop is $100), but when you consider what you’re getting out of the transaction it makes it totally worth the price.

In this video I’ll explain why premarital counseling is worth the price…

I am highly dissapointed in most bridal shows as they focus completly on the “commercial” side of weddings. I would love to have seen permarital counceling options at the show and advice on how to pick a counsler that is right for you. I am in the Nashville Area. Do you have any reccomendations or advice on what questions should be asked when choosing a counsler?

Kristin, I agree that most bridal shows do focus on the “commercial” side of weddings, and that the people who do offer premarital counseling have a responsibility to make their services better known. That said, I think your suggestion of advice on how to pick a counselor is a great one! I’ll probably do a blog post on it soon, but here are some quick suggestions for things to consider:

How comfortable are you with this person? You’re going to be talking about lots of intimate topics (finances, sex, your relationship’s tough times) and you’re going to want to have a “good feeling” about the person.

What makes them qualified to offer counseling? Pastors and licensed counselors are often the most popular resources for premarital counseling. There are also “regular” people who have become certified in various premarital education techniques that are able to offer advice.

What’s their idea of a successful marriage? I think it’s important to know how your counselor or pastor defines a “successful” marriage. If your ideas don’t match up you might not be given the tools to meet your goals.

A full blog post will be coming soon, thanks for the inspiration, Kristin!
